Kris Warfel's "true calling" was being in a plant environment, "where I could immerse myself in the intricacies of the manufacturing process and gain a deeper understanding of the world of plastic bottle production."

Kris Warfel's journey started at an injection molding equipment manufacturer, where some of the equipment was used to make plastic resin furniture. That exposure sparked her interest in plastics and "set the stage" for the rest of her career.

"I then transitioned to a company specializing in automated production equipment, including conveyor systems utilized by various industries, including plastic bottling companies. This continued to fuel my passion for the field, as I witnessed the pivotal role plastics played in packaging, an aspect that had previously gone unnoticed from my consumer perspective," she said.

Warfel's "true calling" was being in a plant environment, "where I could immerse myself in the intricacies of the manufacturing process and gain a deeper understanding of the world of plastic bottle production."

Now the chief financial officer for Lancaster, Pa.-based custom rigid blow molded plastic container maker Graham Packaging Co., Warfel is responsible for financial planning and analysis; managing cash flow; establishing key performance indicators; reviewing strategic investments; and working with teams responsible for data analytics, information technology, internal audit and controllership.

A standout moment for Warfel came when transitioning into the role of production manager: "This move marked a significant departure from the norm and pushed me beyond my comfort zone. It was a role that I never envisioned myself in, but the experience proved to be transformative. What made it even more remarkable was that it defied conventional expectations, especially considering that it was a role you typically would not find women in — especially 20 years ago."

Warfel has an associate degree in management as well as a bachelor's degree in accounting. She volunteers for the nonprofit organization JDRF and serves on its Central Pennsylvania chapter board.

"It is said that if you are the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room," she said. "Giving credit to the team and recognizing their contributions is crucial. I frequently emphasize the value of my team, as they possess greater expertise and experience than I do. By relying on them and learning from their areas of expertise, we all grow and foster a more collaborative environment."
